INVITE TO BOOK LAUNCH... CLARE AND THE GREAT WAR by JOE POWER

YOU'RE INVITED

 JOE POWER

author

of

Clare and the Great War

 invites you

to the
book launch
at the

 Civic Rooms,
Water Park, Ennis

 on

Friday 10 July at 7.30 pm.

"Aristocrats and itinerants, unionists and nationalists, Catholics and Protestants – the Great War united thousands of Clare men and women to a cause for which many of them would go out to fight and die. Their motives varied from a sense of duty to 'king and country' to concern about the fate of 'poor Catholic Belgium'; from mercenary motives, fuelled by poverty, to the moral duty to fight for civilization against the 'savage Huns'. Some followed 'Redmond's call' to secure Home Rule, while others enlisted for sheer adventure. The work attempts, for the first time, to understand what really happened in County Clare during the Great War, how its economic and political life was radically transformed during this terrible conflict, and how the contribution of those who gave their lives was largely written out of history.' - See more at: http://www.thehistorypress.co.uk/index.php/thp-ireland/clare-and-the-great-war-pb.html#sthash.9D1wRBWa.dpuf "

GUESS WHO'S COMING TO ENNIS? 3RD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CLARE ROOTS SOCIETY

GUESS WHO'S COMING TO ENNIS?

The third International family history conference “Diaspora of the Wild Atlantic Way” will take place in Ennis on the 23rd to 24th September 2016. Hosted by the Clare Roots Society, who are celebrating their 10th year in 2016, the keynote speaker will be renowned author and genealogy blogger Dick Eastman from the USA, who is making his first trip to Ireland. Dick is the author of Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter which is published daily. He has been involved in genealogy for over 30 years

Another significant speaker will be the famous Scottish genealogist and author of over 30 books, Dr. Bruce Durie who is currently a Fulbright scholar in the USA researching migration. He will speak on Irish emigration to Scotland. Dr. Durie is Honorary Fellow in Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies within the Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.

Author and genealogist John Grenham will also be a guest speaker at this two day event. He has researched, written and lectured on genealogy in Ireland for over thirty years. His book, Tracing your Irish Ancestors, now in its 4th edition, has been the bible for genealogists worldwide tracing their Irish roots.

Further speakers will be announced in the next few months.

The main theme of the conference is the movement and migration of people from the west coast counties of Ireland to Scotland, Britain and beyond. The event will bring together experts and family historians from around the world to share their knowledge and expertise. The Society has diaspora members in Europe, America and Australia and beyond and welcome them to this social and informative gathering. The conference will appeal to people from any of the counties along the western seaboard and throughout Ireland whose families emigrated in search of greater opportunity.

Conference organisers are building on their past experience and are giving plenty of advance notice as we welcome overseas visitors to our event. A new dimension to next year’s event is the co-location of a lifestyle event that will feature regular talks and demonstrations in an exhibition area alongside the conference. For further details contact secretary @clareroots.org.

CLARE ROOTS SOCIETY BOOK LAUNCH - St Michael’s Villas A History and Miscellany

 Book launch and photo exhibition
" ST MICHAEL'S VILLAS  A HISTORY AND MISCELLANY"
BY CORA (HAHESSY) MC NULTY

On Thursday evening, the 18th of June, at 7.30 p.m. a special Mass will be held to remember the deceased residents of St Michael's Villas in Ennis. The Mass will be celebrated by St. Michael's native Fr.Tom Ryan. This will be followed by the much anticipated publication and launch of St Michael's Villas A History and Miscellany. At the Temple Gate Hotel. St Michael's Villas native, Cora Mc Nulty was born there in 1957 and has put together a great collection of photographs and stories about her native place.  The book itself developed from a memorable reunion in September 2001 of residents past and present.
The book outlines the origins and development of this modern housing scheme that began when land was purchased in 1950 by Clare County Council. The scheme was designed to develop much needed housing for rural people on what was then the outskirts of Ennis town. It reveals a snapshot of life in 1953 the year the first residents made their homes in the Villas. The families that moved in to this brand new development were delighted by the space, the gardens and the flush toilets at a time when the Irish economy was recovering in the era after the Second World War. What emerges is a story of a strong community that rallied together, forming tight knit friendships helping others out in times of need. Many of the accounts recall a simpler life where people cared for and looked out for one another in their new community. The Mr and Mrs rule was in force and children were respectful to their friend's parents and neighbours.
Not only does this book capture the social history of an emerging Ireland from the 1950's through to today, it demonstrates a time and people who were self-sufficient and created little waste. Contributors describe the games and the picnics in the crags beyond the estate as well as the deep faith that people had. Ice skating was a regular winter past time on the hill. Many of the young residents were involved in the Legion of Mary. In 1956 the grotto at the heart of the community was planned and it was completed in 1960.
The book describes the history of the area through the sporting achievements of individuals in athletics, hurling and football.  Music and dance were part and parcel of the life in St Michael's Villas too. There were many renowned traditional musicians among the early residents and other great talents emerged across all the music genres from traditional, to rock and roll through the years.
The photographic record that accompanies the book and dispersed throughout, aids to record the characters, families and memories for future generations.  In the final pages the registers of electors record the residents house by house, over time. Overall the book demonstrate a vibrant and lively community with many children and grandchildren of the original residents continuing to live there today. St Michael's Villas A History and Miscellany is a very important contribution to the history of Ennis. On the night a photo exhibition will reflect on the life and times of the St Michael's Villas community.
This is the latest publication in association with the Clare Roots Society which aims to publish and record local histories, places and people. To date over twenty books have been published with more to come.

CLARE CHATTER... CLARE ROOTS SOCIETY JUNE 2015

CLARE ROOTS SOCIETY PRESENTS...

First of all the launch of a book  on St Michael's Villas by Cora Mc Nulty nee Hahessy, native of St Michael's Villas, will take place on Thursday 18th of June in the Old Ground following a 7.30 mass in the Cathedral. On the night, a photo exhibition will be displayed, which reflects on the life and times of the St Michael’s Villas community.

A CRS member in Australia, Aileen Trinder, has just finished a huge transcription project which is now available. See the attached flyer for further information. The lists don't record the native place of the assisted immigrants but, when checking the names against the assisted immigrants Agent's lists on the State Records New South Wales website, Aileen often noted the native place in the Remarks field of the individual records and there are many people with Co Clare as a native place and all other places both in Ireland and the UK.
Available from author at  www.pastkeys.com.au or from www.sag.org.au (and they'll have stock from 20 June 2015).
